About Us

The Side of a Rock Island Caboose

Have you ever seen a path off into the distance and wondered, “was that a train line?” We have. We also got tired of maps with no detail in them. Google offers one up for the CTA (Chciago “El”) and it hardly has any useful data in in it:

[map id=”map2″ z=”5″ w=”600″ h=”300″ kml=”http://gmaps-samples.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/ggeoxml/cta.kml”]

I wanted something with a bit more data, so I started making them myself. Here is a work in progress for the Chicago Great Western (CGW)

[map id=”map1″ z=”5″ w=”600″ h=”300″ kml=”http://shadowsoftrains.org/kml/cgw/CGW06.kml”]

That’s it.. a simple idea. We wonder about trains. We map them. We share them. Have maps you want to share? Let us know!

  1. Hi Mike,

I am a Land Surveyor and I work for a firm doing a topographic survey of the Great Western in DuPage County.
They are going to build a trail on the abandoned section near Rte. 59 in West Chicago.
I work in the office but hope to be on site if I can get the chance. We are trying to obtain a strip map of the railroad boundary. If we get it I would like to send a copy to you for your website.
    What do you think?

    • Hi George

I would love to see and add any details you can provide. Of course, anything I put up would need to be public information or have permission to share if it has a copyright. Regardless of the outcome, thank you for thinking of us!
